PHYTOSTEROLS, or plant sterols, are isolated from unsaponifiables of vegetable oils. They are structurally related to cholesterol, but differ from cholesterol in the structure of the side chai【SOURCE】

The mechanism of phytosterols for lowering cholesterol


①It can precipitate the cholesterol in the small intestine and make the cholesterol appear insoluble, so that it cannot be absorbed.

②The cholesterol in the micelles can be replaced, so that most of the cholesterol cannot be transported to the absorption site of the small intestine microvilli.

③It prevents cholesterol and triglycerides from forming chylomicrons, and prevents intestinal epithelial cells from transporting cholesterol to the blood.

④It can increase the number of cholesterol transport bodies and promote the pumping of cholesterol back into the intestinal lumen, thereby reducing the net absorption of cholesterol.

Phytosterol (sterol) is also called plant sterol, a kind of steroid, widely distributed in the biological world.

They all take cyclopentane polyhydrophenanthrene as the basic structure, and contain alcohol groups. They are divided into campesterol, brassicasterol, stigmasterol and sitosterol by the difference of side chains. Similar in structure to cholesterol.

Taking β-sitosterol as an example, it can be seen from the above structure that the chemical structure of sitosterol and cholesterol is very similar, only the side chain is different. This similar chemical structure also shows that phytosterols are natural competitive substances for cholesterol.

Product Feature and Application (Soy Sterol)

Soy Sterol, which is effective in maintaining cholesterol balance in the body.

②It is used to prevent and treat coronary atherosclerosis heart disease, which has obvious curative effect on ulcer, skin squamous cell carcinoma, cervical cancer and so on. It can promote wound healing, make muscle proliferate, enhance capillary circulation, and can also be used as an inhibitor for gallstone formation.

③Plant sterol has a high permeability to the skin, can maintain the surface moisture of the skin, promote skin metabolism, inhibit skin inflammation, can protect against sunburn, skin aging, as well as hair generation, hair nourishment effect. It can be used as W / O emulsifier in the production of paste cream. it has the characteristics of good use (good auxiliary, smooth and non-stick), good durability, not easy to deteriorate and so on.

In 1999, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been approved that the foods added phytosterol and phytosterol ester can use "healthful" labels.

In 2010,plant phytosterols and phytosterol esters were allowed to be added to food as new resource foods (Food safety comprehensive coordination and Health Supervision Bureau of the Ministry of health of People's Republic of China, 2010 Third New Resources Food Bulletin).
