Application of methionine in livestock and poultry diets

The role of methionine in feed

 

1. Nutritional effects

Methionine can synthesize body proteins in animals and can be quickly converted into cystine to meet the needs of animals.

Provides active methyl groups for the body to synthesize some methyl compounds such as choline, keratin and nucleic acids.

Studies have shown that even if other essential amino acids other than methionine are added to low-protein diets, the weight gain and feed conversion rate of broilers are still significantly lower than those of high-protein diets. Further addition of methionine can eliminate this difference. If the total sulfur-containing amino acids in the diet meet the needs, 18.0% to 18.7% crude protein and 20.4% to 21.5% crude protein have the same effect on broiler production performance and carcass fat deposition.

6. Improve production performance

Methionine can promote the growth of broiler chickens, increase daily weight gain, and reduce feed-to-meat ratio; it can increase egg production, egg weight, and eggshell quality during the peak egg production period and egg production cycle of laying hens. Adding more than 0.6% DLM or 0.68% MHA to the diet of laying hens can also acidify urine, reduce kidney damage caused by calcium, and reduce the incidence of urinary stones. However, excessive acidification of calcium will affect calcium metabolism, thereby affecting egg production, eggshell quality and bone mineralization, causing metabolic acidosis.

 

7. Used as an acidifier in piglet diet to reduce the acidity of the feed system

The function of the digestive tract of piglets is incomplete and gastric acid secretion is insufficient. When weaning stress occurs, the balance of gastrointestinal microorganisms is destroyed, and Escherichia coli breeds rapidly, eventually leading to diarrhea and reduced production performance of piglets. Acidifiers can increase the activity of digestive enzymes by lowering the pH value of the gastrointestinal tract, changing the suitable living environment for harmful bacteria or directly inhibiting and killing pathogenic bacteria, while promoting the reproduction of beneficial bacteria.

Methionine can buffer the neutralization of gastric acid by high-alkali ingredients in the diet, enhance the acidic environment of the gastrointestinal tract, and increase pepsin. The activity of duodenal trypsin and the activity of beneficial intestinal microorganisms promote the digestion and absorption of nutrients, especially proteins, thereby reducing nutritional diarrhea in piglets, especially early adoptive piglets, and promoting their growth.

8. Bacteriostatic and sterilizing

Adding methionine to feed can inhibit the production of various mycotoxins. Methionine can bind to mycotoxins in feed, making them less toxic. After being added to the feed, it can prevent or control the decomposition of mold nutrients in the feed. At the same time, the body's decomposition of mycotoxins is enhanced, so that production performance can be fully utilized.
