The value of Schizochytrium powder and its application in animal production

Mar 14, 2024 Leave a message

Microalgae are single-cell photosynthetic organisms that grow in a range of aquatic habitats, including lakes, rivers, oceans and even wastewater. Microalgae can synthesize a variety of high-value bioactive compounds, such as essential amino acids, unsaturated fatty acids, vitamins, etc., and are widely used in health care, cosmetics and animal husbandry.

Schizochytrium can be cultured under heterotrophic conditions and is easy to produce on a large scale. The DHA content in the cells can also be controlled by adjusting the culture medium and fermentation process. It is an important resource rich in DHA. At present, Schizochytrium is mainly used in aquaculture as microalgae powder, which is Schizochytrium powder.

Schizochytrium is easy to produce on a large scale and is suitable for large-scale promotion and use. Schizochytrium is a smaller spherical shape, suitable for being preyed on by young aquatic animals, and has high feed efficiency and development and utilization value. Schizochytrium algae is rich in DHA, protein, minerals and other nutrients. Its nutritional value is related to environmental conditions such as carbon source, nitrogen source, pH value, exogenous additives, etc. At the same time, Schizochytrium contains polysaccharide active peptides, squalene and other substances, which has very good application prospects in animal production.

Nutritional value of Schizochytrium algae powder

Schizochytrium algae powder is rich in unsaturated fatty acids, especially DHA. The fatty acid content of Schizochytrium accounts for 18.3%~25.2% of the dry mass.Total fatty acids are mainly composed of DHA, DPA and palmitic acid. Among them, the content of polyunsaturated fatty acid DHA accounts for 39.62%~49.84% of the total fatty acid content. DPA content is approximately 12.5%. Palmitic acid is about 41.8%~46.04%. The content of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and PUFA is small, and the EPA content accounts for 1.25% of the total fatty acid content. Schizochytrium contains 17 kinds of fatty acids, including 9 kinds of saturated fatty acids (SFA) and 8 kinds of PUFA. The most abundant fatty acids are mainly C16:0 and C22:6n-3 (DHA). The fatty acid content is related to the culture conditions. When soybean meal hydrolyzate and yeast extract are used as nitrogen sources, the DHA content of the total fatty acids is 36.84% and 28.63% respectively.

The main nutrients of Schizochytrium algae are protein and lipids, and also contain a small amount of sugar and ash. The protein and fat contents of Schizochytrium algae vary greatly due to different culture conditions, while the sugar and ash contents are relatively stable. When soybean meal hydrolyzate is used as the nitrogen source, the main component is lipid (content is 42.83%), followed by protein (content is 9.35%); when yeast extract is used as the nitrogen source, the main component is protein (content is 42.51%) , followed by lipids (content 18.98%). The total sugar and ash content changed little under the two conditions (contents were 5.27%~6.38%, 4.85%~5.72% respectively).

Schizochytrium contains 16 kinds of amino acids, with higher contents of glutamic acid, aspartic acid, proline and leucine. Different culture media will also affect the content of amino acids. When soybean meal hydrolyzate and yeast extract were used as nitrogen sources respectively, the amino acid compositions were the same, the total amino acid contents were 7.38% and 39.7% respectively, and essential amino acids accounted for about 40% of the total amino acids.

Currently, Schizochytrium is an ideal feed additive to supplement DHA in animal feed production. Adding Schizochytrium algae to feed has two purposes: to exert the physiological functions of DHA in animals and promote the growth and development of animals; and to produce DHA-rich animal products by enriching DHA in animals.

Application of Schizochytrium algae powder

Aquatic production

DHA can provide aquatic animals with effective essential fatty acids, while fish and crustaceans cannot produce DHA by themselves and can only obtain it from feed. Among them, the nutrients contained in feed have a great impact on the survival rate, growth rate and disease resistance of aquatic animals. Schizochytrium algae improves the immunity of aquatic animals. Research has found that adding DHA to feed can significantly improve the tolerance and survival rate of aquatic animals, and at the same time promote the growth and development of aquatic animals.
Common fish and shrimp animal feeds, such as rotifers, artemia, clams and copepods and other aquatic secondary feeds themselves lack sufficient DHA. Feeding Schizochytrium can improve feed nutrition.

Poultry production

Currently, eggs rich in DHA are receiving more and more attention. Therefore, it has become a trend to add Schizochytrium algae to the feed of laying hens to produce DHA eggs. Studies have shown that adding Schizochytrium algae to the diet of laying hens can increase the DHA content in egg yolks. The DHA content in egg yolks is related to the poultry breed and growth stage. At the same time in laying hen feed by adding 2% Schizochytrium powder and choline, the n-3 polyunsaturated fat and DHA content of egg yolks can be increased after 14 days, without any negative impact on the production performance, egg quality and egg components of laying hens. DHA was enriched in eggs for 15 days to reach saturated nutritional concentration. Studies have shown that adding Schizochytrium powder with a DHA content of 15% to the diet of laying hens can significantly increase the DHA content of eggs and reduce the cholesterol content of eggs. The appropriate addition amount of Schizochytrium powder should be less than 3%. At this level, it will not affect the production performance of laying hens and egg quality.

Compared with adding fish oil or flaxseed oil to the diet to obtain DHA eggs, adding Schizochytrium powder can directly increase the DHA content in eggs, and the DHA deposition rate is fast and can achieve rapid enrichment. Unsaturated fatty acids such as DHA are protected in the cell wall of Schizochytrium algae and are not easily oxidized, which is more conducive to the use and nutritional value of Schizochytrium algae powder. Since Schizochytrium powder oil does not contain EPA, DHA eggs produced using it as a feed additive are suitable for a wider range of people.

Ruminant production
Natural DHA milk is produced by fortifying dairy cows with DHA in their diets. Microalgae containing DHA can improve the hydrogenation of rumen microorganisms, increase the content of conjugated linoleic acid in milk, and replace fish oil in dairy cow diets. In the rumen, Schizochytrium powder will be metabolized and decomposed by microorganisms, thereby reduci
ng the effective utilization of DHA.

In order to ensure that the DHA requirements of animals are met, increasing the amount of Schizochytrium added is an effective method, but it will cause an increase in feed costs. Most DHA milks on the market add DHA directly to milk to increase the DHA content in the milk. However, studies have found that as the amount of DHA added increases, the fishy smell of the milk gradually increases, but the milky flavor gradually weakens. The milky flavor of skimmed milk is significantly weaker than that of whole milk. At the same time, as the storage temperature increases, the fishy smell of milk samples becomes more obvious. Using treated algae powder as feed can allow DHA to pass through the rumen smoothly without being used by microorganisms therein, and enters the blood and milk of dairy cows through the fatty acid metabolism process without affecting the normal flavor and taste of dairy cow feed. The development of rumen-passed algae powder can improve the bioavailability of algae powder, reduce the amount of algae powder used, and reduce production costs. It can also improve the health of dairy cows and improve production performance.
