Health awareness is gradually taking root among the people, and people are paying more and more attention to all aspects of their own health. The brain, known as the "human body headquarters", has also become the focus of people's attention.

The number of consumers who are concerned about brain health is growing, and the brain health market is also expanding.

what food ingredients can improve brain health

With such a huge demand in the brain health market, various brain health-related products are emerging one after another. Which brain health-related raw materials are worthy of our attention?

Omega-3

11

Researchers from the University of Texas in the United States published a research paper titled "Association of Red Blood Cell Omega-3 Fatty Acids With MRI Markers and Cognitive Function in Midlife: The Framingham Heart Study" in the journal Neurology.

In the study, researchers analyzed 2,183 dementia-free and stroke-free participants from the Framingham Heart Study. The average age was 46 years, 53% were female, and 22% had APOE4. APOE4 is apolipoprotein, a genetic risk factor for dementia. The study analyzed the association between participants' red blood cell Omega-3 concentration and MRI and cognitive function, and further explored the impact of APOE genotype.

The study found that people who consumed more foods containing Omega-3 fatty acids had better thinking skills and better brain structure. Omega-3 therefore protects brain health and enhances cognitive abilities.

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)

21

The brain science research team of the Chinese Academy of Sciences published a research paper titled "Retinoid X Receptor α Regulates DHA-dependent Spinogenesis and Functional Synapse Formation in vivo" in Cell Reports.

In this study, researchers found that both deletion of RXRA and inhibition of DHA release resulted in downregulation of dendritic spine density and excitatory synaptic transmission. Both overexpression of RXRA and supplementation of unesterified DHA can increase dendritic spine density and excitatory synaptic transmission.

This study found that unesterified DHA (free DHA) in vivo can regulate the development of dendritic spines and functional synapses through RXRA-dependent signaling pathways, and analyzed a new mechanism by which DHA promotes brain development and function.

γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA)

Eunji Cheong and C. Justin Lee from the Center for Cognition and Society at the Daejeon Institute of Basic Science in South Korea published an important review titled "GABA tone regulation and its cognitive functions in the brain" in Nature Reviews Neuroscience.

This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of how the GABA activity state in the brain is dynamically regulated in various brain cells through different mechanisms of GABA synthesis, release, and clearance, indicating the positive effects of GABA in the brain.

Ginseng extract

6

A research paper titled "Compound K derived from ginseng: neuroprotection and cognitive improvement" was published in the journal Food & Function.

This study summarizes the evidence for the neuroprotective and cognitive effects of Compound K, a metabolite biotransformed from ginsenosides Rb1, Rb2, and Rc.

The study found that Compound K has higher bioavailability than other ginsenosides and therefore has greater potential to exert bioactive functions in the body, with neuroprotective and cognitive-enhancing effects.

Ginkgo biloba extract

A research report titled "One water-soluble polysaccharide from Ginkgo biloba leaves with antidepressant activities via modulation of the gut microbiome" was published in the journal Food & Function.

In this study, Ginkgo biloba was shown to reduce anxiety in the tail suspension test (TST) and forced swim test (FST), as well as in the open field test (OFT).

The findings suggest that a water-soluble polysaccharide in Ginkgo biloba reduces stress-induced depression and reverses intestinal dysbiosis and may be a candidate for pharmacotherapy to treat depression.

Curcumin

8

A research paper titled "Effects of Curcumin on Learning and Memory in D-galactose-Induced Aging Mice" was published in the journal "Occupation and Health".

In this study, 50 ICR mice were randomly divided into 5 groups as the control group, Alzheimer's disease model group, curcumin pretreatment group, simultaneous treatment group and post-treatment group. The platform jumping test and dark avoidance test were used to observe the effect of curcumin on learning and memory impairment in AD model mice.

This study found that curcumin can improve the learning and memory loss of AD model mice.
