Beta Carotene, which gets its name from the Latin word for carrot, is an antioxidant that is extremely good for your eyes and skin. It is a compound that gives vivid yellow, orange, and red coloring to vegetables.
The body converts Beta Carotene into vitamin A (retinol). Vitamin A, a nutrient involved in processes such as forming and maintaining healthy skin and teeth as well as in promoting good vision. It can also act as an antioxidant.
One study involved more than 4,000 men over an 18-year period. It linked the long-term consumption of beta carotene to a slowing of cognitive decline. However, no significant difference was found over a short-term period. There may have been other contributing factors in the group that consumed beta carotene long-term.
Beta carotene may also reduce the effect of phototoxic drugs. Other research has shown that it may prevent skin damage and contribute to maintenance of skin health and appearance. This is due to its antioxidant properties. However, studies are inconclusive and more research needs to be done.
